staying at 高野山 宿坊 桜池院 was such a treat! we loved the temple vibe and how close it is to the amazing local temples. our deluxe family room was stunning, with a lovely balcony overlooking the courtyard. the large onsen was a highlight, too, especially since we had it all to ourselves.

Cold halls in winter months!!! Shared shower access limited during morning hours!!! Communication regarding meal reservations could use improvement!!! Being able to hear conversations from the room next door was somewhat intrusive!!!

a so-called ‘temple experience’ that felt more like a boot camp, shared showers were off-limits in the morning, which is absurdly inconvenient! and how could they clear our beds out before check out, leaving us to nap on the floor? after such treatment, i expected a small gesture of goodwill but alas, none in sight. i almost gave it a good review, but just couldn't.

Our family, along with two couples, truly enjoyed participating in morning prayers and exploring temple activities like tracing Buddhist deities. Our spacious room had a beautiful garden view. The food was fantastic, especially the beautifully presented vegetarian meals we savored together.
My wife says that the curfew could be adjusted for families with kids.

It was just a perfect match for a walk in the evening in Koyasan with good price-quality ratio. The vegan dinner was fantastic, and the staff was very accommodating, especially the monk who spoke English well. Use the onsen facilities. it’s a great way to unwind.

comfortable stay with a serene atmosphere
The location is excellent, just steps away from the main temples and attractions. The shared bath experience was calming, providing a relaxing end to my day. The traditional breakfast was a delightful surprise, with a variety of vegetarian options that were both tasty and beautifully presented. The garden view from my room added a tranquil touch, making it feel like an immersive retreat.
However, the shared shower facilities were a bit inconvenient, especially since they weren’t available during the mornings.

The garden view from my room was stunning. it felt like stepping into a postcard. I appreciated the traditional Japanese room with its spacious futon and simple decor. The dining experience was delightful. Dinner and breakfast offered a variety of delicious vegetarian dishes. Participating in the morning ceremony was a unique touch. despite the language barrier, the monks provided a page with the romanization of chants, making it easy to join in. The public bath was relaxing, allowing for a serene end to the day. However, it was quite cold at night, and I struggled with the chilly room despite having a heater. Using the shared shower facilities was also a bit inconvenient, especially because they were not available in the mornings. If you visit in cold months, definitely bring warm clothes! Overall, it’s a special place reflecting the spirit of Koyasan, but be prepared for the temple's shared and simple nature.
